Quinta do Infantado

Quinta do Infantado has been farmed by the Roseira family for six generations, from a single estate in Chanceleiros, near Pinhão, in the Cima Corgo - the Douro's finest sub-region for both Port and dry wine. Founded in 1816 for the Infante D. Pedro, later King D. Pedro IV of Portugal, the property passed into Roseira hands two generations later, when João Lopes Roseira bought the quinta and took the family from grape growers to wine producers.

 

In 1979, his sons Luís and António became the first farmers in the Douro to estate-bottle their own Port, rather than sending it to the négociants of Vila Nova de Gaia - meaning they could only sell domestically until the law changed in 1986. Fifth-generation João Roseira was there for that first bottling and today works alongside sixth-generation Álvaro Roseira, who leads the winemaking with consultant Luís Soares Duarte.

 

Infantado was also among the first in the Douro to farm organically, from 1990, and still works old, field-blended vineyards on those principles, in a style that favours freshness and phenolic ripeness over high alcohol and heavy extraction.​
