The story.
Rocamadre is winemaker Juanfa Suaréz’ exploration of the unique characteristics of Paraje Altamira and in doing so aims to challenge preconceptions of Argentine wine. This small, avant-garde appellation - described by Tim Atkin MW as the Uco Valley’s “equivalent of a Grand Cru” - is noted for its varied terroir as well as its collection of small estates, which are in the hands of families who have been farming here for generations.
Such as Finca Suaréz itself, which Juanfa’s grandfather Leopoldo founded in the 1920s. It was experimental for its time. Around the middle of the 20th century grapes became an uncommercial crop so he switched to apples, pears and other fruits, then Juan's father returned to farming grapes in the 1990s.
Paraje Altamira underwent a rapid transition between 2013 and 2016 from just another sub-region of the Uco Valley to an established, forward-thinking appellation. The process towards appellation or 'GI' status was driven by scientific studies, making it the first in Argentina to be formed for technical and not geopolitical reasons. There are nearly 10,000 hectares, of which roughly one-third are under vine.
